We assist in the provision of comprehensive care for orphaned and abandoned children through strategic partnerships with orphanages and children care centers in the nation of Myanmar.
Our involvement includes the following areas:
Provision of financial and material support for orphanages
We now provide monthly financial support to 23 orphanages.
In addition, we provide various types of material support to 185 orphanages, including food support, clothing, medicine, hygiene supplies, blankets, bed-mats, mosquito nets, bicycles and Christian literature, impacting more than 7,000 children.
Mobile medical and dental clinics
This service has already been provided for at least 50 orphanages and is on-going. To date, several thousand children have received much needed medical and dental care.
Training and equipping (capacity-building) national workers
One week comprehensive child-care seminars have been conducted annually by The Myanmar Compassion Project in the capital of Yangon, since the fall of 2001. The curriculum has been carefully formatted to address the areas noted above. Special emphasis has been given to such issues as the diagnosis and management of common childhood illnesses, nutritional concerns, and the maintenance of proper hygiene. In addition, other relevant topics addressed have included basic management principles and early childhood development issues. A total of approximately 245 care givers representing 150 orphanages have attended these seminars.
Income generation projects
We have funded 16 orphanage-based income generation projects in an effort to help promote long-term financial independence and sustainability for these orphanages.
Orphanage construction projects
To date, three new orphanage buildings have been constructed (total cost = 65,000 USD). In addition, three new building projects have been funded with construction to be initiated soon.
Bible School scholarship program
Twelve orphans from seven different institutions representing three separate ethnic groups were granted scholarships to various Bible schools and Seminaries in Yangon. In 2005, additional funds were donated to allow a total of 20 students to receive full scholarships.
International teams
We have facilitated orphanage visits from teams representing over 10 different nations who have come to work with the children. Activities during these visits have included the following: Medical and dental care, Bible teaching, English language teaching, music and art education, and various recreational activities. In addition, many of these teams have donated materials and funds to the homes they have visited.
Recreational activities
MCP has hosted several large recreational events for the orphanages, including a football tournament in 2002, a children's music festival in 2004 and a Christmas event in 2004. These events were attended by between 1600 and 2000 children. In addition, we provide miscellaneous recreational supplies to the orphanages during our site visits.
